Workshop Description:

This workshop is designed to give participants a basic understanding of gang psychology—this, why gangs exist. Participants will explore the history of gangs in the United States along with gang theory to better understand the evolution of such institutions. This workshop will outline the anatomy of a gang: common characteristics of among members, what membership entails, and various gang activities. Furthermore, this workshop will highlight the environmental factors that give rise to gangs and gang membership. Additionally, this workshop will address the community's response to gangs, reviewing the gang relationship to government, the criminal justice system, and the media. Finally, this workshop will review the link between the emotional and psychological needs of persons belonging to gangs with the clinical implications for professionals working with members within this population. This workshop concludes with a panel of self-identified gang members who will share their experiences and answer participant questions.  

Continuing Education Approval:

  • AODA Professionals: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion for 3 CE hours/credits as approved by the Illinois Certification Board for the following categories: Counselor II, CARS II, MISA II, PCGC II, CCJP I or II, CRSS II, CPRS II, MAATP II, NCRS II, CFPP II, CVSS II.

  • Professional Counselors: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion for 3 CE hours/credits as approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for LPCs and LCPCs.

  • Social Workers: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion for 3 CE hours/credits as approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for LSWs and LCSWs.

  • Nurses: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion for 3 CE hours/credits as approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for APNs, RNs and LPNs.
