Workshop Description:

Cultural competence is one of the most important skills to have when working with clients.  Many professionals work with clients who are Muslim, but may not even be aware that they are of this faith and what it entails.   It is important to understand the culture-specific considerations that impact Muslim clients' lives, and therefore, their treatment outcomes.  This workshop focuses on identifying various sub-groups of Muslim clients and learning the historical contexts of each subgroup that have helped to shape current trends.  From this workshop, participants will be able to identify factors that impede or enhance wellness of these clients, as well as learn current approaches and strategies shown to be effective when working with these clients and their families.  The workshops will also allow participants to develop a professional advocacy plan in which they will actively utilize their knowledge in advocating for their clients in these subgroups.
