Workshop Description:

This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS): a set of behaviors and beliefs related to the multigenerational trauma experienced by enslaved Africans and their descendants. Inspired by the 2005 book from the same name (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing by Dr. Joy DeGruy), this workshop will highlight the ways in which elements of the United States' history: centuries of slavery, systemic and structural oppression, mass incarceration and more have contributed to maladaptive behaviors of enslaved Africans and their descendants, even if originally borne out of survival. Through frank discussions of the ways in which physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and spiritual abuses were meted out to the enslaved populations, this workshop will explore the impact on African-American populations today and the implications for our roles as behavioral health professionals.
