Workshop Description:

Post-partum depression is a serious, long-lasting condition that, if left untreated, can have dangerous consequences for both mother and child. According to some studies, as many as 15% of new mothers experience post-partum depression. As behavioral health clinicians, it is imperative that we can identify when a client is at-risk for the disorder or identify that it is already occurring. This workshop will walk clinicians through risk factors for developing post-partum depression, as well as to identify common symptoms. Additionally, this workshop will help participants understand how the depression develops and its effects on the brain and other parts of the body. This workshop will encourage discussion about the cultural and historical implications of post-partum depression and review current assessment tools to help screen for the disorder. Finally, this workshop will review prevention strategies, as well as treatment options and resources for women who meet the criteria for diagnosis.
