Workshop Description:

This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of "the new Jim Crow", a reference to state and local laws which enforced racial segregation following Reconstruction in the United States. Inspired by the 2010 book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander, this workshop will highlight the ways in which the "War on Drugs" has disproportionately affected communities of color despite the legal system formally adopting a colorblind policy. This workshop will highlight some of the policies and laws that, as Alexander argues, have created a new caste system that excludes people of color from housing, education, employment and voting rights. Through candid discussions, this workshop will explore the many ways these policies affect clients and the implications for our roles as behavioral health professionals.
