Workshop Description:

Group counseling is often the cornerstone of drug and alcohol treatment facilities.  It’s a practice that is framed in helping clients achieve personal growth through interpersonal interaction.  Group counseling allows for clients to build relationships, resolve conflict, share experiences and give/receive feedback from other members of the group.  This workshop aims to help counselors identify group models appropriate for working with clients receiving AODA treatment, as well as group types that complement AODA treatment (special emphasis will be placed on techniques for reaching resistant clients).  In this workshop, AODA counselors will practice group counseling skills by participating in experiential group activities that will allow them to experience the group process from the client perspective.  Workshop participants will also complete a group leader self-assessment to evaluate their own knowledge and biases as they might impact the group process.  All workshop participants will receive multiple resources to add to their group counseling toolkit.
