Workshop Description:
Community violence is a general term used to reference widespread violence within a community. Examples of this type of violence range from drive-by shootings, gang wars, robberies, sexual and other physical assaults, and homicides. When these type of violent incidents take place, communities are shocked, and often traumatized. This workshop will identify the ways in which community violence causes its residents to experience increased fear and an overall sense about their personal security and safety. Through exploration of statistics and case studies, participants will learn the impact of community violence and the role it plays in mental illness and substance abuse. Finally, participants of this training will learn interventions that seek to prevent the incidence of long-term traumatic effects by preparing professionals to rapidly and effectively aid in the community’s recovery efforts when violence does take place.
